the 2005 Sundance Film Festival Program

The films screening in the 2005 Sundance Film Festival Documentary Film Competition are:

AFTER INNOCENCE Director: Jessica Sanders
Missed it. Has distribution. Heard good things about it. People left crying.

THE ARISTOCRATS Director: Paul Provenza
This film had shoddy production values, because Penn and Paul didn't fully realize they were making a film at the time. This is the perfect movie for DVD because the extras will be fantastic. Don't miss Bob Saget discussing fecal matter and incest! And the South Park kids. Don't watch this if you have a weak heart.

THE DEVIL AND DANIEL JOHNSTON Director: Jeff Feuerzeig
Missed it. Heard good things about it.

THE EDUCATION OF SHELBY KNOX Directors: Marion Lipschutz and Rose Rosenblatt
I cried while I watched this film. Just seeing her parents, Xian Texan Republican parents, supporting their daughter to be her outspoken best, was touching. Watch in the company of like-minded liberals for an added sense of smugness.

ENRON: THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM Director: Alex Gibney
Missed it. Looking forward to trying to see it.

THE FALL OF FUJIMORI Director: Ellen Perry

FROZEN ANGELS Directors: Eric Black and Frauke Sandig

MARDI GRAS: MADE IN CHINA Director: David Redmon
Somewhat from the Michael Moore school of filmmaking, but without the annoying personality of the filmmaker on-screen. Plus, the director mostly let the people speak for themselves. A good look at a microcosm of globalization, but c'mon: no one drunk in New Orleans is gonna care about Chinese factories.

MURDERBALL Directors: Henry-Alex Rubin and Dana Adam Shapiro
A perfect subject matter. At first I was miffed that every female in the film is a girlfriend or mom, but that's part of what Murderball is about: being broken in the eyes of society, but still being a man. A fucking, fighting, shouting man. I have Fluevog's like Zupan's. Yeah I do.

NEW YORK DOLL Director: Greg Whiteley

RING OF FIRE: THE EMILE GRIFFITH STORY Directors: Dan Klores and Ron Berger
This has distribution and looks like a great story, though I despise boxing.

ROMANTICO Director: Mark Becker
As Dia put it, "there's a good film buried in there". Interesting story, but not the way it was told. Makes me want to tip the players in tapas places.

SHAKESPEARE BEHIND BARS Director: Hank Rogerson
Missed it, but I have the soundtrack.

TRUDELL Director: Heather Rae
Missed it. I think I would have tried harder to have seen it if I had realized Trudell was involved with the Indian takeover of Alcatraz. Guess it's been too long since I've volunteered there. Hopefully it'll come out.

TWIST OF FAITH Director: Kirby Dick
Missed it. Got an Oscar nomination during Sundance. 4/5 of the films in that category are Sundance flicks. Makes me feel like less of a loser for seeing so few premieres and dramatic films.

WHY WE FIGHT Director: Eugene Jarecki
At some level I found this to be a feel-good-for-liberals version of Fahrenheit 9/11, but I haven't seen Fahrenheit 9/11, so maybe I'm wrong. You know how Grass kept showing how much money was being spent on the war on drugs? That's what this needed. Numbers and sources and points of reference. On the other hand, I had no idea that Eisenhower warned against the military-industrial-congressional complex in his outgoing address, and damn, it's a complex problem that pretty much sums up a lot of the suck about capitalism and democracy.

Dramatic Competition:

DYING GAUL Director: Craig Lucas; Screenwriter: Craig Lucas

ELLIE PARKER Director: Scott Coffey; Screenwriter: Scott Coffey

FORTY SHADES OF BLUE Director: Ira Sachs; Screenwriters: Michael Rohatyn and Ira Sachs
Missed it. No one can believe it won the jury prize, because apparently it majorly sucked.

HOW THE GARCIA GIRLS SPENT THEIR SUMMER Director: Georgina Garcia Riedel; Screenwriter: Georgina Garcia Riedel

HUSTLE & FLOW Director: Craig Brewer; Screenwriter: Craig Brewer
      Missed it. Has distribution.

THE 3 ROOMS OF MELANCHOLIA / Finland Director: Pirjo Honkasalo

DHAKIYARR VS. THE KING / Australia Directors: Tom Murray and Allan Collins

GRIZZLY MAN / USA Director: Werner Herzog
A bit too much Herzog in this. He's a patriarchal pompous poofter, IMHO. Great footage and subject matter, though all people in the film are basically idiots. Still, it's good fun to watch someone discuss death when you know they're dead.

I AM CUBA, THE SIBERIAN MAMMOTH / Brazil Director: Vicente Ferraz

EL INMORTAL / Nicaragua/Spain/Mexico Director: Mercedes Moncada-Rodriguez

THE LIBERACE OF BAGHDAD / UK Director: Sean McAllister

BROTHERS / Denmark Director: Susanne Bier; Screenwriter: Anders Thomas Jensen
Missed it. Hope to see it.

CRONICAS / Ecuador/Mexico Director: Sebastian Cordero; Screenwriter: Sebastian Cordero
I'm not quite sure why I found this film to be disappointing. I think my expectations were too high, because when I break it down, I liked all the aspects I can name. But it needed some more je ne sais quoi.

THE FOREST FOR THE TREES / Germany Director: Maren Ade; Screenwriter: Maren Ade
Cringey film. Well done cringey, but it's hard to be in the mood for that I guess. Wished I hadn't missed Penn's rant at the sex panel for this.

GREEN CHAIR / South Korea Director: Park Chul-su; Screenwriter: Park Chul-su

THE HERO / Angola/Portugal/France Director: Zeze Gamboa; Screenwriter: Carla Baptista

      Missed it. Heard mixed reviews.

PREMIERES:

3-IRON / South Korea Director: Kim Ki-duk; Screenwriter: Kim Ki-duk

THE BALLAD OF JACK AND ROSE / U.S.A. Director: Rebecca Miller; Screenwriter: Rebecca Miller
Missed it. Wanna see it for the commune aspect of it.

THE CHUMSCRUBBER / U.S.A. Director: Arie Posin; Screenwriter: Zach Stanford

DEAR WENDY / Denmark/Germany/France/UK Director: Thomas Vinterberg; Screenwriter: Lars von Trier
This was my favourite suprise of the festival. REVIEW CONTAINS A TINY SPOILER. I can't say I like anything that Lars has done really. And I was ready to be pissed off about the whole handgun thing. But this film is beautiful and lush, and a lot more subtle than people have given it credit for. I adored all of it.

DRUM / South Africa Director: Zola Maseko; Screenwriter: Jason Filardi

GAME 6 / U.S.A. Director: Michael Hoffman; Screenwriter: Don DeLillo
Missed it. A baseball movie that I missed, can you believe it?

THE GIRL FROM MONDAY / U.S.A. Director: Hal Hartley; Screenwriter: Hal Hartley

HAPPY ENDINGS / U.S.A. Director: Don Roos; Screenwriter: Don Roos

HEIGHTS / U.S.A. Director: Chris Terrio; Screenwriters: Amy Fox and Chris Terrio

INSIDE DEEP THROAT / U.S.A. Directors: Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato
Perfect. Just perfect. Watch the, um, uncut version. Fantastic tale of filmmaking and feminism and the first ammendment. Has distribution.

THE JACKET / U.S.A. Director: John Maybury; Screenwriter: Marc Rocco

KUNG FU HUSTLE / Hong Kong/China Director: Stephen Chow; Screenwriters: Tsang Kan Cheong, Stephen Chow, and Chan Man Keung
Fucking brilliant. Chow is, as always, fucking brilliant. Theatrical release is March 18. This film is fantastic, wonderful, giddy fun.

LAYER CAKE / U.K. Director: Matthew Vaughn; Screenwriter: J.J. Connolly

LOVERBOY / U.S.A. Director: Kevin Bacon; Screenwriter: Hannah Shakespeare; Novel by Victoria Redel
Interesting tale... and creepy and good performances by all! Much fun. And creepiness.

MARILYN HOTCHKISS BALLROOM DANCING AND CHARM SCHOOL / U.S.A. Director: Randall Miller; Screenwriters: Randall Miller and Jody Savin
Missed it. Hey A&S: Not only did this get distribution (so I heard), but so did Slamdance's Mad Hot Ballroom! Huzzah!

THE MATADOR / U.S.A. Director: Richard Shepard; Screenwriter: Richard Shepard
Missed it. Missed Mr. Brosnan. But it has distribution. Yay!

MIRRORMASK / U.K. Director: Dave McKean; Screenwriter: Neil Gaiman
Missed it. Seems Netflix-worthy to me.

MYSTERIOUS SKIN / U.S.A. Director: Gregg Araki; Screenwriter: Gregg Araki.
Some people found the subject matter absolutely disturbing, and the characters somewhat flat. I enjoyed the characters in their characterness and enjoyed the ride as they explored their completely fucked up childhoods. Not family fare, but all you sickos will like it.

NINE LIVES / U.S.A. Director: Rodrigo Garcia; Screenwriter: Rodrigo Garcia
Missed it, but I want to use this opportunity to ask, why does Sundance do this? 9 and 9 Songs and 9 Lives. The Puffy Chair and the Green Chair. Chumscrubber and Thumbsucker. The Devil and Daniel Johnston and Shake Hands with the Devil. The Charming Girl and the Girl From Monday. I think it's an inside joke.

REEFER MADNESS / U.S.A. Director: Andy Fickman; Screenwriter: Dan Studney and Kevin Murphy
Perfect. Brilliant. Brilliantly perfect musical version/send-up of the original Reefer Madness film. I must buy the soundtrack... it might surpass Avenue Q as best musical score. I already have Listen to Jesus, Jimmy stuck in my head. I don't know if it's going to be the next Rocky Horror, but damn. It's awesome.

RORY O'SHEA WAS HERE / U.S.A. Director: Damien O'Donnell; Screenwriter: Jeffrey Caine

SNOWLAND / Germany Director: Hans W. Geissendorfer; Screenwriter: Hans W. Geissendorfer

UPSIDE OF ANGER / U.S.A. Director: Mike Binder; Screenwriter: Mike Binder

PARK CITY AT MIDNIGHT:

The films screening in the Park City at Midnight category of the 2005 Sundance Film Festival are:

9 SONGS / U.S.A Director: Michael Winterbottom; Screenwriter: Michael Winterbottom
Missed it. Hoping to see an uncut version, since it's basically porn.

DIRTY LOVE / U.S.A Director: John Asher; Screenwriter: Jenny McCarthy
      Missed it. Looks fun.

HARD CANDY / U.S.A Director: David Slade; Screenwriter: Brian Nelson
It's got distribution, and I know you'll see it, and it's not terrible, and in fact has some outstanding moments, but starting right now, lower your expectations. You'll enjoy it much more.

MATANDO CABOS / Mexico Director: Alejandro Lozano; Screenwriter: Alejandro Lozano

OLD BOY / South Korea Director: Park Chan-Wook; Screenwriters: Park Chan-Wook, Hwang Jo-yun and Lim Jun-hyeong
Mind-blowingly violent, and absolutely wonderful. It took me a day to realize that these were actors. Stunning performances, and a riveting plot. Plus the violence!

STRANGERS WITH CANDY / U.S.A Director: Paul Dinello; Screenwriters: Stephen Colbert, Paul Dinello, and Amy Sedaris
      Missed it. Has distribution.

THREE...EXTREMES / Hong Kong/South Korea/Japan Directors: Fruit Chan, Park Chan-Wook, and Takashi Miike; Screenwriters: Lilian Lee, Park Chan-Wook, and Haruko Fukushima
      Three sicko shorts. Wonderful.

WHAT IS IT? / U.S.A. Director: Crispin Hellion Glover; Screenwriter: Crispin Hellion Glover
I didn't think I'd like this. The trailer looks god-awful. Maybe my expectations were in the gutter, but it was better than I thought it would be. This is not in any way to indicate that this is an enjoyable film. Unless you hate snails. Oh, and there's a sequel.

FRONTIER:

The films screening in the Frontier category 2005 Sundance Film Festival are:

FILM ACTIONS V / U.S.A Director: Luke Savisky

THE JOY OF LIFE / U.S.A. Director: Jenni Olson; Screenwriter: Jenni Olson
I introduced this film for a showing after I had seen it. I described it as a bedtime story from your lover, if your lover is San Francisco. It's slow and beautiful and cozy. Later in the film it's slow and beautiful and irritating, but even that wasn't irritating in a bad way. People walked out of it. It's definitely too slow and too SF for some.

ROOM / U.S.A. Director: Kyle Henry; Screenwriter: Kyle Henry

SUGAR / U.S.A. Directors: Reynold Reynolds, and Patrick Jolley; Screenwriters: Reynold Reynolds, Patrick Jolley, and Samara Golden
100% pure crap. I mean it. Don't waste your time with experimental shit like this. Total suck. Even Crispin's film was better!

SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXIPLASM: TAKE 2 1/2 / U.S.A. Director: William Greaves; Screenwriter: William Greaves

TROPIC OF CANCER / Mexico Director: Eugenio Polgovsky

SPECIAL SCREENINGS:

The Special Screenings of the 2005 Sundance Film Festival are:

BALLETS RUSSES / U.S.A Director: Dayna Goldfine and Dan Geller

THE EMPEROR'S JOURNEY / France Director: Luc Jacquet.
Missed it and really really really looking forward to seeing it on the big screen.

THE GARDEN / U.S.A Director: Frederick Wiseman
Pulled from the festival by Madison Square Garden lawyers. Drats! I really wanted to see it.

THE PROTOCOLS OF ZION / U.S.A Director: Marc Levin
Weak. Too much filmmaker, not enough film. Do you think it's enough to ask a Rabbi to deny a Jewish conspiracy? How about going into how a conspiracy is formed? There's a good film here, but this wasn't it. It's too bad... there were some good moments.

REEL PARADISE / U.S.A Director: Steve James

ROCK SCHOOL / U.S.A Director: Don Argott

GREEN BUSH / Australia Director: Warwick Thornton
